Ethical Dilemma During Change
Change initiatives by healthcare leaders are backed by the desire to increase efficiencies and improve patient outcomes. Healthcare is increasingly dependent on technology, and facilities are leveraging remote care approaches such as telehealth to deliver care to patients who cannot visit the facility. When faced with financial constraints, I have witnessed a physician experience an ethical dilemma in reducing the number of staff in their office and adopting telehealth for non-emergency routine care. An ethical dilemma presents a situation where two moral principles conflict (American Psychological Association). Adopting telehealth would reduce the number of administrative staff as some patient interactions will be done remotely, hence cutting administrative costs. This presented a delicate act of balancing care delivery, livelihood, and finances, as the adoption of telehealth would reduce the number of administrative staff to keep the facility running.
